Physical Limitations

"I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked"
Mark 5:41-42

Physical Limitations

I met Bryce, briefly and gave him a short lesson. I was learning still how to read his eye gaze and how long it too him before he settled on an answer. He actually gives me a pretty clear answer at first then seems to debate--possibly because he wasn't sure I would be ok with his answer. His second answer is very clear. With time, you learn to read and understand an individual better. Bryce gave me a chance and didn't give up on me, which I appreciate. Bryce is quite gifted with technology actually and commonly answers yes and no questions with the raising or lower of his eyes. I didn't get this clarification until after the interview. I should have asked about this before I did this interview as I would have been able to read him quicker. Even though our interview was 2 questions long, I hope you can learn from this video. (It was a pleasure to meet you Bryce!)

There are a variety of disabilities that cause physical limitations--or in other words impair movement or 'typical' movement.

Ideas to help:

1-Make eye contact and say 'hello'--The difficulty with movement can sometimes make interactions more difficult particularly when nonverbal as well. Make a particular effort to acknowledge and greet. Additionally, when we bend down it is natural to talk in a higher pitched voice as we associate it with children. Be mindful of this and talk normally.

2-Be mindful to make rooms accessible--make sure aisles allow for enough room for a wheelchair and walkers to get around and turn corners.

3-Plan how you will include in activities--Figure out how you will adapt activities to allow all to participate or what role they will play in each activity.

4-When needed, figure out how you will deliver options so the individual can communicate if their hands are not able to move with some control.

The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk..."
